There is a saying that “all good things must come to an end.” Then the same must be true that “all bad things must come to an end,” too.

Over the last (and many) weeks, I have struggled with something. And isn’t it terrible when something like this comes when your plate is already full?

That something has to do with a person and the past. It seemed like everything reminded me of this man, and as memories, both good and bad, flooded, more thinking (and overthinking) happened–until it got to a point when the memories were encroaching into my life more and more. I also got to the point when I wanted it to stop, and the only way to stop it, is to face it.

Facing something that bothers you require being honest with yourself, so I knew that while I had good memories with this man, I also had bad ones. Was it worth it to me to dwell on what was and what it didn’t become?

Interestingly enough, it was in watching this season’s episode 3 of The Little Couple on demand that really made me stop and take a closer look at my current situation.

In episode 3, Jennifer Arnold went through chemotherapy for her stage 3 cancer and her husband, Bill Klein, was very loving and supportive–and in all previous episodes, you can feel their love and support for each other.

So I asked myself… “Isn’t this the kind of relationship you want for yourself, Mercedita?”

I want a mutually very loving, healthy, and supportive relationship. What I had with this man, was not that. So why was I continuing to dwell on something or someone that wasn’t good for me or what I want?

I remind myself that I have a choice, and as if to make a point, episode 3 came on soon after–maybe to encourage me to make a good one.

I am grateful for the ability to choose, and I choose happiness.

You have probably read the below story before. It has been around for awhile, but good friend R sent this to a few of us, and it is such a great reminder. Enjoy, and Happy Valentine’s Day!

Bank Account

A 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud man, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o’clock, with his hair fashionably combed and face shaved perfectly, even though he is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today. His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready.

As he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on his window.

“I love it,” he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy.

“Mr. Jones, you haven’t seen the room; just wait.”

“That doesn’ t have anything to do with it,” he replied.

“Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged … it’s how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do.”

“Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away. Just for this time in my life.”

“Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you’ve put in.”

Remember the five simple rules to be happy:

1. Free your heart from hatred.
2. Free your mind from worries.
3. Live simply.
4. Give more.
5. Expect less.

Do you think it’s possible to control your temper when facing enormous pressure?

Yes. It’s a matter of choice to not let it get in the way, or reuse that energy by changing my perspective and attitude to get work done quickly or get through the pressure.

It is always possible to change one’s internal attitude, even if one cannot control external factors.

I did some minimal shopping after dinner at a local BBQ place to try it out. Most of my purchases were for everyday needs. I did do some comparison shopping for a couple of wants (i.e. laptop) for the near future.

I did go to a local video game store with my sister (who wanted to take advantage of some deals) and found a cool game at a discounted price. I asked about it and it ended up being a very rare game with a resale value that could possibly be triple what I paid for it. So I guess I lucked out on that, if I ever want to part with it.

When I had dropped off my sister at her place, I happened to have looked up, and the stars were all out, littering the dark canvas of night. It has been awhile since the sky has been clear enough to see more than the North Star.

The indigo sky, the bright points of light, and the shapes they formed–they were beautiful… (I tried to take a picture of it, but all I got was a black screen. Here is the constellation map from NASA instead.)

The starlit sky reminded me how infinite and vast our universe is, and how blessed we are to see it especially when the night is clear. I feel that even if we are each just a tiny speck in this universe, we still each have a role.

We can each make a difference in someone’s life, in our community, for our planet, etc. We have the choice to give a gift that can be a lasting impression to someone, to something, to somewhere. How cool and awesome is that!

I am grateful to have seen the infinite beauty of the universe last night–and to be reminded that even if we are just a small dot in it, we, each one of us, make differences just as vast as our universe.

choice

I am grateful that we have the ability to choose.

We have the ability to choose our thoughts, and when they turn negative, we have the ability to put a positive spin on them.

We have the ability to choose what kind of day we are going to have, and change our perspective if we want a much better one.

We even have the ability to choose inaction, when we need time to think about the best course of action.

Sometimes, though, making a choice can be hard. Luckily, I found an exercise that might be useful.  This is from Day 2 (Empowered Me) from the Oprah & Deepak’s Desire and Destiny – 21 Day Meditation Challenge.  I hope this can help you too.

Take a moment to observe one choice before you today. Prior to making a decision, check in with your inner voice and ask yourself, “Is this the most nourishing choice for me and everyone around me?” If the answer does not feel right to you, then consider making another decision. If when you check in with yourself, your choice feels right in your heart, then proceed with abandon.
